About me

Sumaiya Matin, MSW, RSW

Registered Social Worker, Psychotherapist

I believe that we all have an inner knowing about who we are, what we need, how it is that we feel whole. It can be challenging sometimes to find our inner beacon to define where we want to go or determine the steps to getting there. I will work with you as a partner, a team player, to come to your truth and carve out the path that you want to take, so that life becomes a little more manageable or fulfilling.

I work with clients who are experiencing:

  • Settlement/immigration related issues
  • Cross-cultural communication issues
  • Life transition and adjustment challenges
  • Spiritual abuse
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Relational and attachment challenges
  • Emotional regulation difficulties
  • Race-based trauma, including Islamophobia
  • Post-traumatic stress

Populations I work with include:

  • Children (all ages)
  • Preteens
  • Adolescents
  • Individual adults

One of my main areas of focus is working with Muslim girls and women and integration of Islamic principles into the therapeutic process. My philosophy is understanding the whole individual ─ cognition, psyche/sense of self, heart, soul ─ and therefore, my approach explores all of these levels of experience. Although different challenges require different tools, I will explore impacts and solutions from a holistic lens with you.

When working with children, I use play therapy, creative storytelling, emotion regulation therapy and cognitive behavioural therapy. I have previously worked with children in the school and community setting on issues related to self-esteem, bullying, motivation, grief, and depression.

Overall, I use an eclectic approach, but I gravitate towards the following modalities:

  • Narrative
  • Cognitive behavioural
  • Person-centered/positive
  • Trauma-focused
  • Anti-oppressive
  • Faith integrated
  • Jungian shadow work

I have an Honours Bachelor of Science degree (double major in Psychology and English) from the University of Toronto and a Master of Social Work from the University of Windsor with specialization in anti-oppressive practice.

It can feel vulnerable, making shifts in life, and it is not always easy to start or keep going. That’s why it’s important to me to go at the pace of my clients, and use whatever modality from my toolkit that aligns with them. It is my priority to create a space for them where they can bring all of themselves, not just parts. I am a guest in their journey.

Initial consultation

If you have any questions or you’d like more information, I offer a complimentary 20-minute telephone/video consultation. Through this initial chat, we can determine whether we’ll be a good fit working together. If for some reason, we do not match, I would be happy to refer you to a different therapist/services.

At present, due to Covid-19, my sessions are offered via phone or video. At the moment, I have evening and weekend availability.

I charge $120 for a session, and I also do a sliding scale for clients who may not have insurance and cannot afford full fee therapy.
