Deciding to start therapy is a big step, and once you’ve made it, you shouldn’t have to wait months to begin. At The Healing Collective, there’s no waitlist, which means you can connect with a therapist like Kathy Neegan soon after reaching out, whether you’re in Toronto’s Danforth East neighbourhood or anywhere else in Ontario.
About Kathy
Kathy Neegan (she/her) is a Registered Social Worker and Psychotherapist with a Master of Social Work and more than 20 years of experience. Over two decades, she has worked with women, men and families in both Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities, helping people navigate relational, interpersonal and social challenges.
Her work is rooted in a deep respect for community, culture and collective healing. Kathy believes healing isn’t something that happens in isolation. It happens in relationship: with ourselves, our families and the communities we belong to.
The Meaning Behind Neegan Miikana
Kathy’s practice is called Neegan Miikana Counselling and Wellness. Neegan Miikana means “The Road Ahead” or “Journey Forward,” and the name captures how she sees therapy: as a process of reconnection, growth and empowerment.
In Kathy’s approach, healing doesn’t require erasing the past or fearing the future. Instead, it begins by standing in the here and now and meeting yourself with presence, compassion and truth. From there, clients begin to reclaim their power. One of the guiding ideas in her work is this: “To understand what is wrong, we must first know what is right.”
Who Kathy Supports
Kathy works with individuals, parents, families and youth. People often come to her when they’re experiencing:
- Depression and anxiety
- Trauma, including intergenerational trauma
- Family violence and relational struggles
- Parenting challenges and parental shame
- Concerns in the parent–child relationship
- A desire for self-discovery and personal growth
Her focus on intergenerational trauma and parental shame is especially meaningful for parents who want to break painful patterns and build something different for their children.
Kathy’s Therapeutic Approach
Kathy’s practice is flexible, holistic and culturally grounded. Rather than using one method for everyone, she draws from several evidence-informed approaches, including Gestalt therapy, narrative therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy, expressive arts, parent–child dyadic work and structural family therapy.
This range lets her meet clients where they are. For some, that means exploring and reshaping the stories they’ve been told about themselves. For others, it means strengthening the bond between a parent and child, or looking at how a whole family system can shift toward healthier patterns.
